Plastic Surgery: Recovery Aids

By: Michael Russell

Article Word Count: 558

The days and weeks following plastic surgery can be unappealing when you still have slight bruises, swelling, scarring and unusual bulges. Patients may confine themselves to recover at home in the hopes of keeping it private but quite often one cannot avoid the fact that we may need to step out into the public when necessary.

Plastic surgery healing varies and it could just be days, but for others could prolong into weeks. Recovery aids including aesthetic options can help camouflage the fact that you have just undergone plastic surgery. These include compression garments, accessories and camouflage make-up. In most, if not all, of the plastic surgery procedures these are an essential part in the patient’s recovery process.

The kind of compression garments and accessories, as well as the specified period of time they are to be worn by the patient after surgery, will be dependent on the surgeon’s recommendation. For example, patients of breast surgery will receive instructions as to the type of bra to wear weeks after the surgery. Some of these bras have to be worn by the patient for 24 hours for about a week or so. Liposuction, abdominal and breast surgery require compression garments to be worn continuously the whole day even for several months after plastic surgery.

Compression garments serve both medical and aesthetic purposes. Compression garments actually reduce the occurrence of hematoma or blood clot. It decreases the after plastic surgery swelling, and lessens the risk of the operated area not “molding” into the correct position. With a compression garment, clothes look and fit better and the swelling is visibly reduced.

Throughout the entire recovery period after plastic surgery, the skin color can change from purple, blue, black, yellow, green, brown and gray. Scars from incision would normally be red during the entire recovery duration. Camouflage make-up differs from your regular make-up and has been specifically designed to address symptoms during recovery. It contains paramedical ingredients to help address the problem and the difficulty associated with masking or covering skin especially during recovery.

The scars, bruises, swelling and unusual bulges can be covered with the aid of camouflage make-up. Aside from this, camouflage make-up can as well cover fine lines, skin discolorations, spots, dark eye circles and blemishes, which are all skin qualities that come with aging. It can also improve the appearance of birthmarks and skin imperfections. A camouflage make-up line is offered by many of the practicing cosmetologists and plastic surgeons. Your surgeon would be the best-qualified professional to discuss specific recommendations for use and to teach you about the technique of using such.

Camouflage make-up can actually become a part of your make-up regimen all throughout your lifetime if you have certain spots that are difficult to cover. The choices can range from concealers, foundations, creams, powders, etc. and these can be used to soften swells and neutralize skin discolorations.

Your surgeon should advise you as to what compression and accessory garments you will need both for short and long-term uses following plastic surgery. Always consult with your doctor as to the camouflage make-up and other recovery aids that you should use.
