Plastic Surgery: Tips For Choosing Your Surgeon

By: Michael Russell

Article Word Count: 537

Most procedures involving plastic surgery require considerable knowledge and skill in both medicine and surgery. Several important factors have to be considered before allowing yourself to go under the knife.

Two of the major qualifications that you have to think about would be the plastic surgeons medical training and experience in his chosen field. Many plastic surgery procedures like tummy tuck and breast augmentation can be very invasive and the operation can take a long time. Great care is a must in the conduct of such an operation for certain organs and muscles in the body are affected during such procedures. For other plastic surgery procedures, incisions have to be made in delicate body areas, which require surgical skill.

Another important consideration would be your surgeon’s board certification. This issue can be a bit confusing as you will find many plastic surgeons promoting together with their name all sorts of board certifications and society memberships. Different certifying boards have different requirements when it comes to surgical training and experience. So, physicians with different board certifications may be trained for certain plastic surgery procedures with others certified in other operating procedures.

A board certification or a membership in a society is not at all a guarantee of a successful surgery outcome or that no complications are to occur. However, you can be confident with physicians who are certified by certain boards that really require extensive and rigorous medical training and experience. You can always be sure that board certified surgeons have obtained the appropriate training and experience.

To make the best choice possible, you should research your doctor’s credentials, education, certification, training and experience. Check on the doctor’s past performance by taking a look at the before and after photos of plastic surgery procedures that he or she has done in the past. Past patients’ referrals could also be used as one of the basis for your decisions. You may have relatives or friends who have undergone surgery and obtained excellent results from that particular surgeon.

Physicians nowadays are also no longer certified for life. Recent advances, discoveries and developments in the field of medicine require doctors and surgeons to periodically re-certify themselves. This can assure patients that their surgeons are getting up to date trainings in their field of specialization.

It is important to note that board membership is not granted by medical societies. Certain societies such as the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and American Society of Plastic Surgeons, for example, invite surgeons to participate and become their members. Their members must obtain a specific number of hours or education units in order to maintain their membership in such medical societies. This is so, in order that members are constantly updated and informed of the latest changes in the field of plastic surgery as well as to learn new surgery procedures to ensure the safety of their patients.

The decision is ultimately in your hands. It is up to you to decide on which plastic surgeon would best meet your specific needs and your goal.
