Plastic Surgery – Arguments For & Against

Plastic or cosmetic surgery is one of the greatest gifts to the human body. This gift of plastic surgery has restored or enhanced countless individuals self esteem, appearance & faith within themselves. Conversely it has also destroyed many individual’s self esteem & faith because the change in appearance after plastic surgery has in the individual’s eye been a disaster.

First we will deal with the pro argument for plastic surgery.

Plastic surgery for those disfigured for whatever reason other than self inflicted has made countless thousands lead as near to normal lives as is normal. People through no fault have been able to transform themselves to handle every day life without emotional scars hindering their lifestyle.

Imagine seeing yourself in the mirror after being engulfed in flames or after acid has burnt your face & body. It is a shock no matter how strong the individual is. Sadly these occurrences happen both by accident & by deliberate action from misguided souls (to be nice). Successful plastic surgery has allowed many people to recover from this type of shock and be inspirations to others with far less physical limitations.

Equally military personal with bullet or shrapnel wounds have had plastic surgeons perform miracles to their bodies but especially their faces. We all tend to look at other’s appearance but first we look at the face. People have a fear of looking at disfigured faces. Do you tend to look away or avoid people with prominent scars on their faces? So plastic surgery not only helps the injured but it also helps society in general handle facial disfigurement.

Children born with & adults who develop unsightly growths on their faces have had the growths removed by plastic surgery. Not only has the growth been removed but the teasing & the taunts are also removed especially for the children.

Plastic or cosmetic surgery is often associated with breast enhancement or enlargement. For many women this breast enhancement has allowed them to feel more complete with their perceived greater appeal to the male population. Likewise with men penis enlargement allows some men to feel that they are more able to pleasure women with a larger penis. True or false doesn’t matter; it is the individual’s perception or belief.

Now we deal with the argument against plastic surgery.

Possibly the main argument discussed against plastic surgery is because it is mainly performed on the rich & famous for purely self images of vanity. For example plastic surgery to hide a wrinkle or two, to defy ageing or to look like Elizabeth Taylor is seen as for the privileged few. The reasons for having the plastic surgeon operate are in themselves seen as cosmetic. People should be happy with themselves warts and all. Self image has nothing to do with appearance or so some argue.

Most people would be surprised to hear that there is a growing demand for plastic surgery in Iran. The BBC TV news service showed in one family all members except the father had had plastic surgery. Two sons had nose jobs, the mother had also had plastic surgery performed once & was planning a second surgery in a few months time. This was a family with a profitable business, that is, they were rich.

Another argument against is that once you have a nip & tuck you have to continually have more plastic surgery to counter the aging process. Once you start with it you cannot stop. The plastic surgeons simply want their patients to continue to have needless surgery. The Iranian family mother supports this thought.

Others would argue that people have been disfigured more as a result of plastic surgery than as a result of other causes of disfigurement. Mistakes by plastic surgeons have been well documented. For example a woman had plastic surgery to have her breasts enlarged. The result was enlarged breasts but not of equal proportion. Psychological scaring was the non physical result for a poor job.

In conclusion the arguments for & against plastic surgery will always be discussed. Discussion is good. Overall the benefits far outweigh any perceived elitist vane thoughts generated by any anti rich or anti plastic surgery folk. There are simply far more cases today of average men, women & children having plastic surgery performed on them to improve their visible bodies. Plastic surgeons today perform miracles on some patients and most patients do not show any visible scars which are testament to the skills of the surgeons performing the plastic surgery.
