Cosmetic Plastic Surgery #30

By: Michael Russell

Article Word Count: 423

Nearly every person in the world has something about their physical appearance that they don't like. For many people, this imperfection causes a lot of emotional pain and stress. Some think that they are too fat or too skinny. Other people have physical deformities that make them stand out in a crowd for all the wrong reasons. We all know that children are not the only ones who can be cruel to people who look different than others. Some people withdraw from society because of their appearance and an alarming number of people consider having cosmetic plastic surgery.

The only cosmetic plastic surgery that I can rationalize is the surgery that repairs physical damage to a patient who has undergone a mastectomy or other physically scarring procedure done in connection with treating a disease. I have a few very close friends who have undergone implant surgery following radical mastectomies. It was the only way that they could feel as if their experience with cancer was completely over. By rebuilding their body to what it was before, these women could finally walk away from the life they knew as cancer patients.

Whether it is to change your body shape with liposuction or implant surgery, cosmetic plastic surgery offers many options to people who want to change how they look. You can get a nose job, a facelift, or even have eyebrows or eye makeup tattooed to your face. The advancements in cosmetic plastic surgery are frightening. It is no longer possible to look at some people and know what their natural face looks like. We have all seen images of the infamous cat woman who has had so many surgeries that she no longer looks human. It is just a fact that cosmetic plastic surgery has become very popular and pervasive.

Even with the high costs of cosmetic plastic surgery, more people than ever before are signing up. Some girls who are too young to get a drivers license are having implant surgeries. Like many women I completely understand the desire to look different than you do in your natural state. I cannot, however, understand the mentality of people who actually undergo cosmetic plastic surgery.

With all the risks associated with cosmetic plastic surgery I have a difficult time understanding why so many people opt to have it. People die all the time because of complications of cosmetic plastic surgery and yet the numbers of those who choose to have the surgeries keep going up. Where or how will it end?
